Why Weeds Keep Growing Between Your Pavers (and How to Stop Them)Stone Surgeons Tips & Advice

Published September 15, 2026

If you spend part of every summer on your knees pulling weeds out of your driveway, you’re treating the symptom. Weeds don’t grow out of pavers. They grow in the joints between them, and they only get a foothold when those joints are in bad shape.

What goes wrong in the joints

Interlock is laid with sand packed between every paver. Over time, rain, pressure washing and freeze-thaw cycles wash that sand out. What’s left is a gap that collects dirt, seeds and organic debris, which makes a perfect little planter for weeds, moss and ant colonies.

What polymeric sand does differently

Polymeric sand is joint sand mixed with binders. Once it’s swept into the joints and activated with water, it hardens into a firm but flexible joint. That does three things:

  • It resists washout, so rain and hoses don’t empty the joints again.
  • It blocks weeds and ants from getting established, because there’s no loose material for them to work with.
  • It locks pavers together, which helps stop shifting and wobbling.

Why DIY polymeric sand often fails

Polymeric sand is unforgiving. If the old joint material isn’t cleaned out deep enough, the new sand sits in a shallow layer and cracks. If too much water is used when activating it, it can wash out or leave a hazy residue on the pavers. If the pavers aren’t completely dry first, the sand sticks to the surface. Getting it right comes down to prep, depth and timing.

The long-term fix

The best results come from doing it in the right order: deep clean the surface, blast out the old joints, re-level anything that’s sunk, sweep in fresh polymeric sand, activate it properly, then seal. That’s exactly what our interlock restoration service is built around.
